I really appreciate this report you put some cold hard facts out there, I have a couple questions though. I’m enlisted in the Marine Corps and I’m set to leave in the summer and I’ve been lifting hard 5 times a week splitting muscle groups and i run 3-4 miles after becaus we have a physical fitness test that requires us to run 3 miles should I still only do sprints?

    • forgedstrength says:

I would add in 400m and 800m repeat sprints. Run those at anywhere from 70-80% and use incomplete rest periods. Do those for a while and you’ll build up some serious conditioning.

You can sprinkle in a few longer runs here and there but mid distance sprint will give you an engine that doesn’t stop!

      Thanks for commenting bro!

I never went to a corporate gym in my life, it’s not easy to train alone, to practice the form of exercises and to take myself to next level without some inspiration our a philosophie thats valid to me, like yours IS! Thanks for the wake up call, hope every one that reads it can apply it like i do every day!

  6. Attila Bencze says:

I ‘ve been practicing Shaolin Kung-fu for over a decade and have been sifting through different methods like functional training, kettlebell, etc. to grab all that’s valuable and USE it in our training..
So you basically put down my own thoughts in here(I enjoyed feeling that others think like this too).
I live in Europe, Hungary but your blog and vids have been a major inspiration to me, all I can say is I hope one day we can meet and have a blast-off Freakshow Friday together :-)
    Keep rockin’ it!!!

    All time quote Travis…

“In fact, another excuse that really gets me fired up is the whole “I don’t have TIME to train…”
Motherf*cker… You MAKE TIME TO TRAIN!”

Thanks for all the hard work you’ve put in, i’m sure just as many are putting it in when they front up at the gym to attack your program… I sure as sh!t have and it’s morphing me into a weapon.

So a BIG thanks from Down Under!
    Vince.

    Thanks Travis!
It helps to focus the energy to sit down and write out what is bugging you. I agree with the majority of your post. I find the Paleo Diet too restrictive, when it discourages beans and grains. But I would say I eat a modified Paleo-type diet, of healthy meat, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

My area of weakness is Setting Goals. My “goals” are too vague and have no deadlines.
I will sit down and write out 3 solid goals with timelines of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Just in time for the New Year, but that was not my plan. lol

I find MANY people “comfortable” with their life and body and yet complain about it.
My neighbors all think I am crazy for lifting, climbing, sprinting, jumping rope, animal walking, sled dragging and car pushing in the front yard. They ask “what are you training for, a triathlon?” I reply, “No, Life” and invite them to train with me. They never do of course. Many of my neighbors have had surgeries and procedures that were caused by a sedentary, inactive, lifestyle, I hope someday they get the hint.

In the meantime I will keep leading by example with a smile.

    Randy

    Travis,
F*cking awesome report ! You tell it like it is with no sugar coating ! To me it’s this honest, no nonsense, use some commen sense attitude that gets things done !
One thing that annoys the hell out me off (and I think it would/does you too) is people’s “feelings getting hurt”. I think that’s why I liked this report so much.
You told it like it was and if someone doesn’t like it . . . too bad !
I have put the responsibility of my training on my shoulders, meaning it is up to me to get where I want to be ! It’s as you say…take it all in, keep the good and use it ! In my workout area I have my motto spray painted on a wall “You make You !” I believe this 110% !
When I finally pulled my head out of my a$$ and put it in the game, I found that with every struggle I pushed through, I broken new barriers and pushed my goals higher.
I still have a way to go, but the journey is incredible !
Thanks again for telling it like it is.
    Matt

I just read the bullshit report and love what you had to share. It fired me up to have someone like you sharing your knowledge and being honest about how to train or at least it seems like you really do want to help people get better, whether its with fitness or life in general, I really liked what you said about goal setting with deadlines , because I have dreams and goals of how I want to look and feel but at the moment I don’t really have a deadline, so my next step is getting a deadline for my next goal, I’m working on my nutrition and trying to go H.A.M. everyday, thanks for everything you do Travis,
